Winter 2020 Foodbank Challenge

The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed many households who were just making ends meet to the very edge.  With more families and individuals across our region losing jobs due to the recession and Covid-19 pandemic, the South Shields Food Bank has been forced to open its doors five days a week, from Monday to Friday.

A recent report from The Trussell Trust has warned that UK destitution rates will double by Christmas alongside an explosion in demand for charity food parcels, as Coronavirus job and income support schemes are wound down.

South Tyneside Food Bank desperately need a massive 15 tonnes of food to replenish our stock and see us through the winter months.

Chair of Trustees Pauline Tinnelly said: “The work our dedicated frontline team and volunteers at Hospitality and Hope do is life-changing for many of the people we support. Like many charities Covid-19 has had a massive impact on the services we provide. Demand for the food bank is increasing yearly, with the roll out of Universal Credit and the pandemic has made it unbearable for some individuals and families we support.”

Pauline added: “I have been a trustee at Hospitality and Hope for over 4 years and it is so rewarding to see the people who come to us at absolute rock bottom then through the team’s support they to go on to lead healthy and happier lives. We need 15 tonnes of food to ensure that we can continue to provide food parcels and care packages to the most vulnerable throughout the winter. As well as this Hospitality and Hope needs vital financial support to enable the delivery of our services, buildings, and maintenance.”

We are asking local people of South Tyneside if they can donate food and toiletries. We are asking local businesses and schools to donate items they might have otherwise been donating to cancelled school and church harvest festivals.

As well as food donations we are asking businesses who are not holding a staff Christmas party this year if they are able to donate a percentage of what they would have spent to our £15k Winter Virgin Money Giving campaign” - added Pauline.

Local people, schools, churches and businesses can donate items (Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm) to Hope and Hospitality’s Hampton Street Operation Centre, Hampden Street, South Shields, NE33 4JR.

If you can help please contact the South Tyneside Food Bank on 0191 420 3336.
